She always had a thirst for adventure in her life. She pursued that spirit by becoming an avid outdoorswoman and runner during the 1970s. Her first big trip to the wilderness was to Minnesota’s lakes with Outward Bound. From there she quickly expanded her hiking horizons with an ascent of Mt. Kiliminjaro in 1981 and then to the base camp of Mt. Everest in 1984. Despite physical limitations due to osteoarthritis in later years, she still traveled abroad to destinations like Antartica (where she saw many penguins, her favorite animal), Chile, Patagonia, Vietnam, Latvia, Russia and Israel (this last trip with a group of nuns!). In between trips she ran countless hours in and around New York City. Her love of running spilled over to her sons with Lucien joining her as a kid for runs along the East River. She was one of the early members of the New York Road Runners Club and participated in 5 km races in Central Park when that was still an unusual weekend activity. Certainly she never shied away from a challenge. In addition to traveling and running, she skied, fished, sailed, white water rafted, and camped. She also trained to be a pilot to conquer her fear of flying. She was always afraid that something might happen to her husband John while flying his plane, so she took flying lessons and learned to fly herself.
