Kate’s career as an artist spanned from the early 1970s to the late 1980s. She rented studios in Westchester and then in New York when she moved there with her boys in 1981. She painted while her boys went to school or would occasionally bring them along to draw by her side. She exhibited at Acquavella Gallery in 1979, the Michael Reed Gallery in the early 80’s, and participated in a showing at the Pepisco Summerfare in 1981. Her works can be found in the collections of Pepisco and other major contemporary collectors. She continued her interest in art by working at the William Doyle Auction House developing an expertise in 19th century painting and eventually earned her master’s degree in art appraisal. She then started her own art consulting business in the late 1980s advising and buying art for corporate collections in New York City. Clients ranged from small firms to major corporations like Solomon Brothers. Her career in art then transitioned from businesswoman to writer as she co-authored Masterpieces: The Curator’s Game with Thomas Hoving and Lori Stein in 2007 (published by WW Norton). The book presents a playful way to learn about details of masterpieces in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It was also a way for Kate to celebrate her love for Met, a place where she time relaxing. In 1991 she re-married to John Emmerling and also around that time bought her dream house in Chatham, Massachusetts which she called home for many years. Cape Cod was always a special place for Kate as she spent her childhood summers there at her grandparents’ house. That tradition continued with her boys as she rented then eventually bought a property in the town of Chatham. The house was a sanctuary for her and a gathering place for family throughout the year. Many memories of lobster dinners, summer sunsets on the seawall and long walks on the beach were created during these years. Later in 2000, her beloved dog Max joined her and remained a faithful companion throughout the rest of her life.
