Kate and I met on an airplane taking an Outward Bound group to a remote lake district between Minnesota and Canada. This was the beginning of a friendship that continued for thirty years and included adventures to Nepal in 1981 and to the summit of the 20m foot Mt. Kilimanjaro in 1984. These were not easy trips. They involved strenuous physical effort, extreme courage, and above all a fabulous determination to succeed. Kate had all these qualities even when confronted with potential life threatening situations. She was a beautiful, caring, sensitive person who loved life and in later years battled tenaciously to hold on to hers. That she did not succeed is a tragedy for her family and friends who will remember her forever. Leon (Lee) Weil
